EXCELLENCE THROUGH KNOWLEDGE, SERVICE, AND COMMITMENT
Scholars Academy students are required to complete a minimum of 20 community service hours per year. If a student surpasses the 20 required hours, those hours should be included on the log, but those hours will NOT roll over to the next year or throughout his or her years at the Scholars Academy.
The purpose of the community service requirement is to instill a habit and a love for contributing to one's community. Hours completed over the summer may be applied to the following academic year. All students are encouraged to dress neatly and wear Bulldog or Scholars Academy gear when volunteering in the community.
DEFINING COMMUNITY SERVICE
"...services which are identified by an institution of higher education, through formal or informal consultation with local nonprofit, governmental, and community-based organizations, as designed to improve the quality of life for community residents, particularly low-income individuals, or to solve particular problems related to their needs, including:
such fields as health care, child care, literacy training, education (including tutorial services), welfare, social services, transportation, housing and neighborhood improvement, public safety, crime prevention and control, recreation, rural development, and community improvement;
work in service opportunities or youth corps as defined in the National and Community Service Act of 1990;
support services to students with disabilities; and
activities in which a student serves as a mentor for such purposes as tutoring, supporting educational and recreational activities; and counseling, including career counseling."
Taken from the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended by the Higher Education Amendments of 1992, and the Higher Education Technical Amendments of 1993
DOCUMENTING COMMUNITY SERVICE
Hours are to be recorded on a Community Service Log and turned in before the last day of school each year. Seniors should turn in their hours at the end of April.
Students should obtain an authorization signature from a volunteer opportunity organizer. A parent signature will not be accepted unless the parent was the responsible party. Please check with the volunteer opportunity organizer about the exact number of hours that can be credited to the volunteer.
Completion of all hours is required for students to obtain the Scholars Academy Designation upon graduation from Thomasville High School. Designated Scholars Academy students will receive a Scholars Academy seal on their diploma and a Scholars Academy patch for graduation.
